EXAMPLE PAST PROJECTS:

Syen boasts a broad base of technical expertise, including: software; digital electronics and microprocessor systems; instrumentation and control; mechanical, electro-mechanical, and hydraulic systems. These skills allow Syen to tackle a wide range of application projects ranging from R&D test rigs to military vehicle sub-systems. The following are examples of some recent project work undertaken:

Wind Tunnel Control
Syen have designed and implemented a digital control system for the wind tunnel for one of the UK Formula 1 teams. The system controls and operates interfaces for the rolling road (controlled at over 100mph) and the main wind turbine using microprocessor technologies, mechanical design, and hydraulic actuation.

Active Suspension Simulation and Test
Syen designed and built a system to research and test active suspension systems. This included computer modelling of the suspension dynamics, the implementation of a very dynamic hydraulic control system, and the design and build of a test rig to enable damper design.

Machine condition monitoring and alarm
The test facility is highly dynamic and requires 24 hour operation. A condition monitoring and alarm system was designed and installed to monitor key operational parameters including bearing temperatures and rail gaps. The installation included a full building security system, a laser light curtain around the machine and remote telephone alarming.

Research test rig controller
A unique test rig designed to research the effects of oil additives on gear synchronisation forces. As well as the normal drive and dynamometer controls, the system changes gear and measures the loads on the change mechanism. A full SCADA style operator station was provided with automated data collection and reporting.

Sensor and Weapon Platform Control
Syen designed and implemented a new gunner and commander’s control panel for a prototype vehicle. The system included control of the infra-red and daylight cameras, the laser range finder, navigations systems, and the weapon, and integration with the vehicles other systems including the Battlefield Management System.
